Standards Portfolio
Overview
The purpose of EDUC 450, is to prepare teacher candidates for their classroom by covering classroom management, standards based teaching, and new teaching strategies. Throughout the semester EDUC 450 at Rocky Mountain High School has given me the opportunity to participate in two classes, pottery and jewelry. EDUC 450 is divided into two portions, teacher candidates meet during Period I to learn new strategies, talk to professionals, and get an overview of assignments. During Period 2 teacher candidates teach, observe and provide support in their cooperating teacher's class. This allows teacher candidates get first hand knowledge on planning, classroom management, and assessment.
The class portion of EDUC 450 is predominantly learning techniques, strategies, and hearing first hand accounts from various professionals at Rocky Mountain High School. Each teacher candidate must teach a strategy from Making Thinking Visible. This allows for another teaching opportunity as well as being able to learn from peers. After Period 2, the class regroups for seminar which is focused on discussions about specific problems or questions that come up during Period 2. This final portion of class once again stresses the importance of learning from colleagues.
During my time in Mrs. Cronen's Pottery and Jewelry class I have been able to teach multiple lessons and even design a full project in Jewelry. In both classes content has been around art techniques and processes, concept building, and analysis of art and its function. This has given me the chance to practice and build classroom management with 25 plus students all working on various tasks. I designed a project from start to finish which included material ordering, demos, assessment and concept. Seeing the full process of a lesson has broaden my ideas on re-teaching, modifications and accommodations, as well as how to implement meaningful reflections to conclude a project/unit.
