Stanadard 4:
Teachers reflect on their practice.
I chose two lesson plan reflections to demonstate standard 4 because the first was done at the beginning of the semester and the other one near the end. The amount of detail added to the second reflection helps me realize the importance of assessing yourself as much as your stuents. By being able to breakdown the dyanmic enviroment in the clasrroom I can create a better learning space. This also allows me to make goals on for places I need improvement on.
Lesson One Reflection
To what extent were lesson objectives achieved? (Utilize assessment data to justify your level of achievement) 1. I believe the learning target was accomplished but I did not present it well enough in the beginning so that the students could self assess if they were able to do it or not. From the instagram posts I was able to see which students used multiple pottery terms when describing their pots. 75% of the students went beyond stating that they liked the design on the cup. The instagram post allowed students that didn’t want to share out loud an opportunity to share their views and knowledge on the subject. Students that didn’t have instagram had the option to take a picture with their cup and send me an email of their thoughts. What changes, omissions, or additions to the lesson would you make if you were to teach again? 2. I would better introduce the learning target and make sure the students know what is expected of them for this lesson. I would model for students a critique of my own cup so they know what type of terms I am looking for and what I am observing when I use my cup. By modeling this behavior students will know how to analyze a cup as user and as an artist. This would allow students to have some base knowledge on critiques and allow them to formulate thoughts that go beyond the beginning observations. What do you envision for the next lesson? (Continued practice, reteach content, etc.) 3. The plan is to re-create this scenario as a conclusion to their cup project but instead of using CSU students' cups they will be using their classmates. This will better solidify the critique process in art, and how to give constructive criticism to fellow artists. By getting to use their own cups they will also be able to compare it this first cup observations. How were their plans carried out for their design and form? Is the cups function obvious? |
Lesson Two Reflection
To what extent were lesson objectives achieved? (Utilize assessment data to justify your level of achievement)1. The finished rings will be completed with Friday, but to this point I think that 70% of the students achieved the main purpose. This was the first project that I designed, and where I taught multiple lessons. Being able to teach back to back lessons made it easier for me to get a better scope of teaching as a whole. Since this has been a multi week lesson I just taught that last demo today. My data analysis will be completed tomorrow evening after I get back my soldering assessments and reflection from each student.
What changes, omissions, or additions to the lesson would you make if you were to teach again?2. Though I have not received my data back I have already mistakes from my end that has affected the progress of the project. Early on in my demos I did not stress the importance of taking good notes, this lead to students continuously asking to reteach demos, and asking questions that I had already covered during the demo. This lead to frustration on my part as well as not being able to have full management of the classroom. I would make sure that all students are taking notes during the demos, and let them know that I can answer clarifying questions during the demos but will not being going through the process step by step again. Something else I would re-do is how I set up demos. The class has 26 students and when working with jewelry it can be hard to see the details. Since most of the time students have at least another project to work on or their bulb site, it might be best to break the demos into two groups. That way students are able to get closer and ask questions in a smaller group. What do you envision for the next lesson? (Continued practice, reteach content, etc.)3. My last lesson will be next Wednesday, I will be leading a critique on their rings. This will be a great time to use the data analysis to reflect on the process and have students share their struggles as well as their achievements. I want to students to get more comfortable with sharing their thoughts on their art as well as their failures. Its something that is definitely lacking in schools; failure is a large part of life and we need to normalize mistakes and promote growth. I hope that students feel more prepared on sharing reflections after having to write down responses to these types of questions twice during this project. |
