Standard 2:
Teachers establish a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment for a diverse population of students.
The following assignments represent Standard 2 because it have various examples of how I intent to implement an open, mindful and diverse classroom environment. Element A of standard 2, covers providing predictable and nurturing environment between peers and adults. My management plan (figure 1) outlines class expectations and normalizes behaviors that promote student accountability. This can be accomplished through a practiced routine of work time, planning, portfolio reviews and exhibitions. In this class, Community Art, students will be expected to be accountable of learning through portfolio reviews, and self and peer assessments. The management plan also includes Elements B, C, and D which focus on class inclusion, individual strengths, and modifications in the classroom. The community art class promotes students to connect with their community by creating artwork inspired for the public. By working in groups students can bring their strengths to their groups and participate in collaborative projects. Like stated earlier an importance component of the management plan is the use of reviews from both the teacher and group mates. It allows students to get feedback at pinnacle times in the semester, as well highlight the importance of documentation and process, his meets Elements E and F of Standard 2.

Figure 2: Teaching strategy from Making Thinking Visible
|
Figure 2 is the teaching strategy I presented in front of my classmates. The strategy has taken from the book, Making Thinking Visible which gives teachers various ways to highlight thinking. This strategy was heavily based on questioning, and how follow up questions can direct students to more in depth analysis of their thinking. Element B and F are present in this assignment through diverse imagery and practicing questioning as an important part of the classroom. The image used in this example is Diego Rivera's Man At A Crossroads. This was a famous mural done by Mexican painter and activist Diego Rivera. Images like this present students with various world views, since it highlights the industrial revolution, as well as the sensitive topic of communism. Students are prompted to analyze the painting and begin asking themselves questions about the subject matter, painter, and time period. After analyzing the piece students are expected to point out things that stood out to them and answer follow up questions that can help them develop their views or evidence.
